"Just business," he’d said, his voice a little too loud, a little too defensive. The words, thin and hollow, echoed in the vast emptiness of the bedroom. A coldness had settled over Amelia, a chilling premonition that stole the warmth from her limbs. She kept finding his phone hidden, tucked away in drawers, under books, always facing down. The screen’s gleam, usually a source of connection, now felt like a taunt. Her appetite had vanished, replaced by a hollow ache that settled in her stomach. She felt as though she were standing on a precipice, staring into a bottomless abyss.
