The flickering neon sign outside the diner cast long, distorted shadows across the table. Her fork, heavy in her hand, hovered over the untouched eggs. The taste of the coffee was metallic, a reflection of the bitter taste that had taken root in her mouth. She could still hear the rapid clicks of the phone’s buttons from last night, a melody of deceit played out in their own home. It was the way David’s hand had immediately shot up to his phone when he thought she wasn’t looking. The casual tone that turned to something strained and secretive whenever he answered. She felt a knot, hard and unyielding, constricting her chest.
