The silence in the car was deafening, amplified by the rhythmic swish of the windshield wipers. It had been like this for days. He, glued to his phone; she, adrift in a sea of suspicion. She found a lipstick stain on his collar. A message on the phone, deleted. Her hands gripped the steering wheel so hard her knuckles were white. The world around her seemed to shrink, focusing only on the phantom conversations that played out in her mind. Every red light was a reminder of the standstill she was in, trapped and unsure of where to go.
