Rain lashed against the overflowing gutters, mirroring the chaotic churn in Amelia’s chest. Another fight with Mark. Another slammed door. Another sleepless night beckoning. She wandered through the damp, cluttered yard sale, the scent of mildew and forgotten things clinging to her. A small, worn bear, one button eye missing, sat perched atop a pile of chipped teacups. Its fur, matted and faded, held a strange, familiar comfort. Amelia froze, a sudden jolt running through her.

Her fingers traced the bear's faded seams. The silence of the morning pressed down on her; the only sounds were the distant rumble of thunder. She recognised the scent of lavender from her childhood. It felt like a lifetime ago, a simpler time before the arguments and the crushing weight of everything. She felt the urge to cry, to break down and curl up. The seller's voice, gravelly and indifferent, broke the spell. "Five bucks. Needs a bath."
