"Just another chore," Martha muttered, forcing herself to climb the attic stairs. She had barely managed to eat anything for days. The house, with its creaking floors and shadows, felt like a prison.

She discovered a collection of antique teacups, each one delicate and chipped. A sudden thought occurred to her, and she shuddered. She imagined the previous owner, a woman of refined tastes, perhaps, her life now ended.

She picked up a teacup, turning it over in her hands. The porcelain felt cool against her skin. A profound sense of loneliness washed over her, mirroring the emptiness she felt. She put the cup back and closed her eyes for a moment.
