The world seemed to have tilted on its axis. Every surface in the dorm room – the desk, the bed, even the poster of the Golden Gate Bridge – now felt imbued with a sinister aura. Ava paced the room, running her hands through her hair, a habit she'd picked up recently.

She found herself snapping at her friends, pushing them away with curt responses and averted gazes. The laughter that used to come so easily now felt like a betrayal of her inward state.
