He hadn't slept well in weeks. John ran a hand through his hair, leaving it a mess. The dog, with his boundless energy, was the perfect symbol for his own feelings of restlessness. He could hear the dog scampering across his lawn. He felt a deep ache inside, a constant throbbing.

He had promised himself this morning would be different. He'd find a way to make it through the day. He stood and walked toward the window. The sunlight felt too bright, and the world seemed to spin. The dog, the escape, the incessant barking. He felt as if the world was crumbling around him.
