The aroma of freshly brewed coffee did nothing to soothe Coach Peterson’s agitation. He sat at the picnic table, the plastic chairs creaking under his weight. He had just finished the team selection.

He had to release Ben. The kid was a phenomenal athlete, but his attitude... it was a disaster. He hadn’t been able to make the team atmosphere work.

He remembered Ben's defiant glare, the way his jaw clenched when he was criticised. Peterson felt a heavy weariness settle over him, a sense of defeat. He understood the need, but that didn’t make it easier.
