Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Amelia's throat as she pulled out the brittle cardboard box. Sunlight, sliced by the narrow window, illuminated motes dancing in the gloom. Inside, yellowed photographs lay like forgotten dreams. She'd been expecting the usual – stern-faced ancestors, stiffly posed. Instead, a photograph of her grandmother, her hair a cascade of black curls, laughed with a man who was decidedly not her grandfather, their bodies leaning close, a picnic basket at their feet. A coldness spread from her chest, a prickling that she couldn't explain.

Her hands shook as she picked up another image. Her father, a man of rigid propriety, in a rumpled suit, squinting in the sun, playfully wrestling a stranger in a field. The scene felt shockingly intimate, utterly at odds with the stoic figure she knew. Amelia felt a profound disorientation, a sense that the foundations of her life were shifting beneath her feet.

She knew what she had to do. The silence in the house, once comforting, now pressed down on her, the weight of a secret she felt compelled to unravel.
