He slammed the lid shut, the sound echoing in the cramped apartment. The discovery felt like a physical blow. Thomas had always believed his grandfather, a war hero in all family stories, was a paragon of virtue. The pictures revealed a very different man: a younger, brash version, grinning with a group of soldiers, one arm slung around a woman who clearly wasn’t his wife.

He ran a hand through his hair, the action a familiar gesture when he was overwhelmed. The knot in his stomach tightened. The man in the photographs seemed reckless, almost callous. He couldn't reconcile the stories with the images.

Later that evening, he sat on the couch, staring at the blurry television screen. He had no appetite, the pizza box on the coffee table unopened. The weight of the revelations felt crushing, the familiar contours of his family history warping before his eyes.
