The air in the office felt thick, heavy. He stared at the blank screen, the cursor blinking like a mocking eye. He could barely focus on his work. This was the moment he had been waiting for, for years. The coveted position was within reach. It was all he had ever wanted, but the thought of another person winning sent a chill down his spine.

He felt a tremor in his hands as he picked up his coffee cup. He saw the expression in her eyes as they passed each other in the hall. He knew she wanted it just as much. The weight of it all was crushing.
