The drive home felt unusually long. The radio blared a cheerful pop song, but it only amplified the emptiness inside him. He felt hollow, as if a part of him had already been taken away. He clenched the steering wheel, his knuckles white.

He replayed the conversation with his colleague, Lisa. The air was charged with a tension that was almost unbearable. He could feel it. She deserved it. He deserved it. The thought of them competing against each other felt like a personal tragedy.
