The rain hammered against the windows, mirroring the relentless drumming in Leo's head. He should be focusing on his upcoming presentation, but instead, he was lost in the cavernous space of his father’s study, surrounded by the man’s absence. He'd inherited the house, a burden and a blessing, after his father’s unexpected passing. He was going through the paperwork, organizing, when he discovered it. A draft letter, crumpled and stained with what looked suspiciously like coffee. It was a complaint, a blistering, barely concealed tirade against his father’s superior at the pharmaceutical company. The language was uncharacteristically angry, a side of his father Leo had never witnessed. A knot of unease tightened around his ribs. He felt a profound sense of disorientation.
