Gemotions

The lawyer’s words hung in the air, a cruel echo of the reality facing Maya. Her mother was downsizing, selling the family home. Clearing out the attic felt like excavating the past, and with each box, the weight on her shoulders grew. In a trunk, tucked beneath moth-eaten shawls and forgotten Christmas decorations, she found it. A letter, typed on a now-obsolete typewriter, addressed to the art gallery where her mother had worked as a young woman. It was a refusal of a promotion, a statement of quitting, and it was signed, but the signature was heavily scratched out. The paper was thick, almost stiff, and the ink had bled slightly, making the words appear blurred. A dizzying wave of nausea washed over her.
