The phone felt heavy in his hand. Ethan stared at the screen, the notification blinking, signaling another text. The apartment felt cold. He looked outside the window and noticed a thick fog covering the city. The darkness seemed to reflect his own internal state, everything felt muffled.

He finally opened the message. It was a picture of a suitcase, packed and ready. He felt a sharp pang, a quick and sudden intake of breath, at the realization that he was about to lose someone.

He closed his eyes, remembering the first time they met, a random act of fate. He had never felt this way before. It felt like losing a piece of himself.
