Clara stared at the printed document, the words blurring before her eyes. The sheer audacity of it. The identical research proposal. The exact same data analysis. The same… everything. A bitter taste filled her mouth. She felt a chill, despite the warm office. The carefully constructed image she had of herself, of her future, seemed to shatter into a million tiny pieces.

She stood up abruptly, her chair clattering against the floor. She walked towards the door, then turned and went back to her desk, staring down at the document as if it was a snake. She couldn't breathe. Her hands were clammy. She felt a hollowness in her chest, an emptiness that echoed throughout her.
