The coffee cup trembled in Maria’s hand, the dark liquid threatening to spill. Inside, tucked away in a file labeled “Investments,” was a printout. Her wife, Sofia, had opened a savings account, years ago, without her knowledge. The balance was substantial.

She walked to the kitchen and stared at the door that led to Sofia’s art studio. She wondered if she should go in. Should she ask Sofia about it? Or pretend like she never saw it? Her hands clenched, her knuckles turning white.

She felt a wave of cold rush through her, and she suddenly felt the need to get outside and clear her head. She went out to the porch and stood there, breathing in the evening air. The air was cool, but it offered little solace.
