“Honey, are you okay?” The question, from his husband, Ben, startled Robert. He had been staring, frozen, at the bank statement, trying to make sense of the figures. He had found it tucked inside a gardening book, of all places.

He couldn't meet Ben’s gaze. He felt a heavy cloak of disappointment descend upon him. He mumbled something about being tired and needing some fresh air.

He moved to the door, then turned and looked at Ben. His face was a mask of forced serenity. He stepped outside, the cool evening air doing little to soothe his inner turmoil. He began to walk aimlessly down the street.
