The familiar scent of sandalwood incense usually soothed Chloe, but tonight it only seemed to amplify her disquiet. Across the low table in her living room, Maya recounted the art exhibition with a wistful tone. She’d described the beauty of the paintings, the clever critiques, the perfect, intimate atmosphere.

Chloe felt a knot forming in her stomach. The exhibition, as she remembered it, had been a blur of crowded rooms, uncomfortable silences, and a growing sense of inadequacy. The paintings had felt…cold, the critiques, pretentious. She picked at the edge of the tapestry hanging on the wall.
