He'd been putting this off for weeks. He'd find any excuse to delay the inevitable. Now, here he was. He clenched his jaw as he pulled into the driveway. He hated this feeling.

The house seemed to exhale a sigh. The windows were opaque, like a clouded memory. He imagined his grandmother, a wisp of a woman, sitting on the porch swing. He quickly shook the thought away.

He walked up the overgrown path, his shoes crunching on the gravel. He reached for the doorknob, and his hand hovered. It felt like a betrayal. He spun around, and surveyed the street. He felt trapped.
