Coach Davies took a deep, deliberate breath, the kind he only did when he was about to deliver a difficult announcement. He watched the rain streak down the window of his office, the gray of the sky mirroring the grey inside of him. The weight of the decision had been a constant ache.

He had been avoiding the players, especially Mark. He had even been skipping the team meetings. Now, he felt the familiar pressure in his chest. A knot formed in his throat, making it difficult to swallow. The silence in the room was deafening.

He looked down at the paper in his hand, the ink blurring slightly. He felt the cold seep into his bones.
