The shadows in the elevator seemed to deepen, amplifying the sense of isolation. Brian watched as the numbers above the door, which he had been fixated on, remained stubbornly fixed. He swallowed hard. The dryness in his throat was becoming unbearable.

He cleared his throat again, trying to dislodge the tightness in his chest. He took a step closer to his coworker, Susan, though he couldn't quite meet her eyes. He felt a need for some kind of reassurance, some sign that they would actually get out of this.

He focused on the scuff marks on the floor, on the peeling paint of the ceiling. Anything to distract him from the feeling of being trapped.
