“Another late night at the office, honey?” Michael asked, his voice carefully neutral. He found himself avoiding looking at her. He didn’t want to look at her. He knew what she was going to say. The secret phone calls, the late nights, the averted gazes... it all told a story he didn't want to believe.

The dinner felt heavy in his stomach, as though it was weighted down with all the unspoken emotions. She touched his hand, and he flinched. The world seemed to be tightening around him, constricting, and the familiar comfort of their life together had vanished.
