Gemotions

The envelope, addressed in elegant script, sat unopened on Sarah's cluttered kitchen table. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, but she couldn't bring herself to open it. Her fingers twitched, a nervous habit that had been with her for as long as she could remember. She stared at the floral pattern on the wallpaper, her gaze unfocused. A lump formed in her throat.

Sarah thought of the classmates she once knew. There were the ones she had envied and the ones who had ignored her. The idea of revisiting those relationships, of facing the past, made her chest tighten. She turned away from the invitation, reaching for a cold cup of coffee. The bitter liquid did nothing to soothe the tension in her jaw.
