Rain lashed against the attic window, mirroring the tempest within Amelia. She swiped a hand across her forehead, pushing back a strand of damp hair. Dust motes danced in the lone sunbeam slicing through the gloom, illuminating the boxes she’d been dreading to unpack. Her grandmother’s things. A duty, not a pleasure.

A faded photograph, tucked between brittle letters, caught her eye. A young woman, laughing, perched on a vintage motorcycle. It wasn’t her grandmother. The woman in the picture was vibrant, carefree, and definitely not the prim, proper matriarch Amelia had known.

A knot tightened in her stomach. The stories were always about hardship, resilience. Never about this – the sheer, unbridled joy captured in a fleeting moment. She picked up another photo, then another. Each one a betrayal of the carefully constructed narrative of her family’s past. Amelia’s chest felt constricted, as if a great weight had been placed upon her.
