Gemotions

Rain lashed against the attic window, mirroring the tempest within her. Amelia crouched amongst dusty boxes, the air thick with the scent of mothballs and forgotten things. She was searching for Christmas decorations, but stumbled instead upon a faded envelope. Her own handwriting, clumsy and familiar, stared back. Inside, a letter addressed to her mother, written twenty years ago. As she read, a bitter taste filled her mouth. The words were laced with a yearning she'd long tried to bury, a desperation for understanding that had never come. She crumpled the paper, the sound sharp in the quiet room.
