Sarah slammed the car door a little harder than necessary. The slam resonated in the empty parking lot, a metallic echo mirroring the hollowness inside. The news had dropped like a lead weight in her gut: Mark, her rock, her confidant, was relocating to Seattle.

She trudged towards her apartment, the familiar route suddenly feeling foreign and unwelcome. The weight of it all pressed down on her, stealing her breath. She didn't want to talk, didn't want to explain the tightening sensation in her chest.
