The harsh fluorescent lights of the office seemed to amplify the throbbing behind Mark’s eyes. He found the manuscript in the bottom drawer of Emily’s desk. It was called “The Portrait of a Man Afraid.” The main character was a man who felt like a ghost in his own life, constantly overshadowed by his wife's success. The scenes meticulously documented his professional failures and the casual indifference of Emily. A bitter taste coated his tongue. He sat motionless for a moment. He had stopped sleeping well, waking up with a sense of dread. He picked up his coat.
