He stared at the first line of the book. "She was a study in shadows." Daniel read on, his breath catching in his throat. It was his partner, Chloe's, novel, "The Obsidian Heart." The protagonist, clearly him, was a man consumed by his own ambition, neglecting his relationship and the needs of his partner. His jaw clenched, a muscle fluttering in his cheek. The description was merciless. A wave of exhaustion washed over him. The world around him seemed to dim, the colors fading. He felt the sudden need to escape.
