The professor’s voice, usually so measured and kind, now held a distinctly sharp edge. "We need to discuss your paper, Sarah." The words hung in the air, heavy and accusing. Sarah’s hands were clammy.

She avoided eye contact, staring fixedly at the intricate pattern on the Persian rug. The room felt suddenly cramped, the air thick with unspoken accusations. She kept trying to clear her throat.

Every syllable the professor uttered felt like a hammer blow. The comfortable familiarity of the professor's office had dissipated, replaced by a space that felt like a courtroom. The silence in between the words felt like it could suffocate her.
