The elevator ride to the interview felt excruciating. In the mirrored walls, Maya caught her reflection, her face unusually pale. Across from her, she saw her friend, Chloe. They were both applying for the same position at the publishing house.

The elevator doors opened, and they stepped out, the polished floors reflecting the fluorescent lights. Maya felt a sudden wave of heat, even though the air conditioning was blasting. She found it hard to breathe.

As they walked down the hallway, the other candidates' nervous energy seemed to be radiating. She felt this strange, prickling sensation on her skin, as if she were under a spotlight. She fiddled with her earring, wishing she could just disappear. She felt an odd sinking feeling.
