The absence was a hole in the fabric of the morning. It felt wrong, like a missing tooth. The quiet was almost suffocating. He'd been looking forward to a relaxed day, but now, a cold dread filled him.

He reached for his phone, but his hand trembled. He had to call the tow company. His heart hammered in his chest. He felt as though the very air around him was tightening. He focused on his breathing, trying to calm down, but he couldn't.

He took a step towards the sidewalk, then stopped. He turned back towards the empty space. He felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of threat. His gut told him something was wrong.
