The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the small bakery, but Chloe could barely swallow. Her friend, Ben, was recounting the events of their high school graduation. "And you, you were the one who set off the fire alarm! Remember? Everyone was so mad."

Chloe choked, a wave of confusion washing over her. She recalled the day, the speeches, the joy, but not… a fire alarm? It felt like a missing piece in a puzzle, a phantom limb.

Ben was laughing, clearly enjoying the story. The baker, overhearing, chuckled in agreement. Chloe’s face burned. Everyone else seemed to accept this version of events.

She wanted to scream, to shout that he was wrong. She felt a need to leave, to get away from these smiling strangers. Instead, she managed a weak smile. "Oh, right… I guess I forgot." She fumbled with the clasp of her purse, a cold sweat breaking out on her forehead.
