The phone felt heavy in her hand. Sarah reread the doctor’s message, the impersonal words a slap in the face. Their mistake. Her life, her medical history, belonged to another.

Her breath hitched. She clutched her chest, the pain a sharp, unwelcome reminder of her own frailty. She felt as though someone had pulled the rug out from under her, leaving her to flail in the void.

The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in. She needed to sit down, needed to gather herself, to understand the information.
