The air in the house seemed charged, as if a storm was brewing. Maria found a textbook on the kitchen table, open to a page of Arabic script. The textbook didn't belong to her. She recognized the handwriting; it was Alex's.

A bead of sweat trickled down her temple. She felt a growing sense of unease.

Later, she confronted him. He was evasive, offering a vague explanation about a work project. His eyes didn't meet hers. She found herself scanning his face for something, anything. The color drained from her face. She felt a strange lightness, as if she might float away.
