"Bonjour," Michael said, the word catching in his throat. He’d overheard Jessica on the phone earlier, speaking fluent French. He’d known she had some familiarity with the language, but not at this level.

Jessica turned, a smile playing on her lips. It didn't reach her eyes. The smile felt forced, unnatural. He shifted his weight, suddenly feeling awkward in his own home.

“Just practicing,” she said, her voice a little too loud. He couldn’t bring himself to meet her gaze. The room felt colder, emptier than usual. He was struck by a sensation of deep disquiet.
