"Well, that's odd," Sarah muttered, examining the card. It was a simple, elegant design – a single, perfect rose on a cream-colored background. Her birthday had been last month. And she couldn’t remember anyone sending her a card, ever.

She felt a knot tighten in her chest. She was usually a logical person, but her thoughts were racing. Was this a prank? A mistake? She set the card down on the table, her hands trembling slightly.

Suddenly she felt a strong desire to call her best friend, just to hear a familiar voice. That feeling was soon followed by an overwhelming impulse to hide.
