She peered into the darkness, a sliver of light from her phone struggling to penetrate the gloom. The hidden room, revealed by a loose panel in the dining room, was an anomaly. She felt a growing sense of discomfort, a tightening in her chest.

She had always loved the charm of the old house. Now, however, the shadows seemed to lengthen, the silence to deepen. She wished she had never found it.

She felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to retreat. She took a step backward, then another, her breath coming in shallow gasps. She wanted to be anywhere but here, in the cold, silent embrace of the hidden room.
