The phone call was short, abrupt. "I'm not coming," was the only thing she said. He sat, staring at the phone, a pit forming in his stomach. He didn’t know why. They had a date night planned, and now she'd cancelled. He was starting to get a sick feeling.

He decided to go to their usual spot anyway, a small jazz club. He needed some air. He was already feeling uneasy. As he walked in, he saw her. She was at a table with a man, laughing. The man's smile was genuine.

He stopped, his legs suddenly heavy. He couldn’t breathe. He recognized the man. He knew the way he looked at her. He knew the way she looked at him. The music seemed to fade, replaced by a dull roar in his ears. He was numb.
