The basement steps creaked ominously as Olivia descended. The air grew colder with each step, the musty smell intensifying. She paused at the bottom, her heart pounding in her chest.

She reached for the light switch, her fingers fumbling in the darkness. She jumped at the sudden burst of light. The space was filled with shadows and strange, forgotten items. She felt a prickle of alarm.

She told herself it was just a basement, just clutter. But she couldn't shake the feeling of something lurking in the shadows, something waiting. She wanted to turn around and leave immediately.
