The aroma hit Amelia like a physical blow. Cinnamon, nutmeg, a hint of something floral – her grandmother's secret ingredient. It was the "Celestial Spice Cake" they were calling it now, displayed front and center in the bakery window, a picture-perfect replica of the one she’d baked for the county fair, years ago. Her hands clenched. She felt a prickling sensation on the back of her neck as she peered inside.

She pushed open the door, the bell above chiming a bright, cheerful greeting that felt like a mockery. The shop was bustling, a line snaking towards the counter. She observed the cake’s presentation: identical frosting roses, the perfectly browned edges. A knot formed in her stomach. She felt a growing pressure in her chest.

"Can I help you?" The young woman behind the counter wore a bright smile, her apron pristine. Amelia just stared, unable to speak, her throat suddenly constricted. She shook her head and backed out the door, the bell ringing again, this time a sound of escape.
