The headline screamed at him from the newspaper: "Local Inventor's Breakthrough!" He stared at the picture, the stranger's smiling face. His own face felt hot, flushed.

He threw the paper across the room, the crumpled pages landing with a thud. He paced his apartment, the steps he'd taken for years now felt unfamiliar, as if he'd forgotten how to walk.

He felt a deep tremor inside, a sort of silent rage. He didn’t know where to direct it. He felt trapped, his own invention, the one he had envisioned, was now his prison.
