The rejection letter crackled in Amelia’s hand, a brittle thing that seemed to shrink the moment she touched it. Her apartment, usually a haven of warm light and cluttered comfort, felt suddenly vast and echoing. She paced the length of her living room, her steps quick and anxious, the worn rug doing little to soften the sound. Her fingers traced the embossed logo of "Veridian Press" on the envelope, the elegant script now a mocking reminder of her failure.

A sharp pain jabbed in her chest. She had envisioned the book on their shelves, the cover art, the reviews... The fantasy crumbled like ash in her grasp. She abruptly stopped, staring out the window at the city skyline, its towers seeming to lean in on her. She felt a prickle of sweat between her shoulder blades.

She needed air. Grabbing her keys, Amelia fumbled with the lock, her hands shaking. The cold night air slapped her in the face as she stumbled outside, the weight of the rejection a physical thing, pressing her down.
