The karaoke bar was a cacophony of off-key singing and drunken laughter. Leo had gone to kill time, not expecting much. Then, a young woman stepped up, microphone in hand, and the opening bars of "Burning Ember" filled the room. His own song.

He felt a strange, prickly sensation all over his skin. He leaned back against the wall, a sudden wave of dizziness washing over him. The woman’s voice was… passable, but lacked the genuine passion, the underlying pain, he’d poured into the original.

He closed his eyes, then quickly opened them again, unable to escape. The room spun around him, the song a cruel reminder of a past he'd desperately tried to bury. He fought to maintain control.
