The traffic was a nightmare. Alex gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. The radio, normally a source of comfort, grated on his nerves. He kept checking the rearview mirror, imagining everyone was judging him.

He was late. He had been late for everything lately. He couldn't seem to focus, his thoughts constantly drifting back to the interview. He drove past the office building, and the realization hit him.

He pictured his colleague, John, who had always seemed to have the upper hand. He ran a hand through his hair, the strands catching his sweaty fingers. The knot in his stomach tightened with every mile. The world was closing in.
