Gemotions

The phone on Sarah's desk rang, startling her. Her breath hitched. It was the call she had been both anticipating and dreading. She stared at the receiver, her hand hovering over it. She had prepared for this, she had wanted this.

She imagined the faces of her colleagues, the speculation. She knew that Michael, the other candidate, was hoping for this position. She looked at the picture on her desk. She wanted this, for her future, for everything.

She picked up the phone. Her voice sounded strained, even to her own ears. The words, however, she knew all too well. She pressed the phone to her ear. The silence on the other end felt like an eternity.
