"This isn't real," she muttered, staring at the letter. It had arrived via the post; an apology from a distant relative, a person she hadn't seen or heard from in over two decades. The words described an act of cruelty committed when she was a child. Her mouth went dry. She stood up abruptly, pacing the length of the living room, her fingers itching. Each step was quick, almost frantic. She stopped at the window and stared out at the street. The familiarity of her surroundings felt completely off. She felt like she should run away.
