Gemotions

The musty scent of the solicitor's office seemed to cling to Amelia, a damp blanket against her skin. She kept fiddling with the pearl necklace, a nervous habit that had returned in full force. The lawyer, a man whose face was a collection of meticulously arranged creases, droned on about assets and liabilities. Then came the twist. Her brother, Thomas, was bequeathed the family home, a sprawling estate nestled in the valley. Amelia, however, received a small, leather-bound journal. It was heavy in her hands, its pages yellowed with age, and filled with a spidery script she couldn't decipher. A strange prickling sensation crawled up her spine.

She ran her thumb across the inscription on the cover. "The Obsidian Quill," it read, in elegant gold lettering. The lawyer watched her with an inscrutable gaze.

Later, alone in her sterile apartment, Amelia tried to open the journal, but her hands trembled so badly she dropped it. The pages spilled open, revealing intricate drawings alongside the text. They depicted fantastical creatures and unsettling landscapes. A cold dread, like an unwelcome guest, settled deep within her chest. The more she looked, the less she wanted to understand.
