The image of the house, bathed in the golden light of the afternoon sun, swam before her eyes. It was a beacon, beckoning her back to a time she'd thought long gone. She felt a tingling sensation in her extremities.

She found herself opening the listing again, and again, poring over the floor plan as if decoding an ancient map. Her stomach churned. The thought of strangers inhabiting the space where she had spent her formative years made her head swim.

She muttered to herself, a jumble of half-formed thoughts and questions. She needed to know. She had to understand. She called in sick to work and got in the car.
