He sat frozen, the glow of the screen reflecting in his wide eyes. The listing’s photos showed a home completely transformed. The memory of the wallpaper in the dining room, the scuff marks on the banister, the worn carpet in the living room – all vanished. A profound disquiet settled within him.

He slammed his fist on the desk. The sudden movement startled him. He felt disconnected, adrift. His heart hammered against his ribs. It was as if a part of him had been ripped away, a piece of his identity stolen.

He paced the room, running his hand through his hair. He needed air. He needed to be anywhere but here. He grabbed his coat and keys and walked out.
